VarsityFlicks.com announces Spirit of Collaboration Award VarsityFlicks.com, a website devoted to filmmakers, is sponsoring a $650 award to be announced at the after party for the Columbia University Film Festival on May 11 at LOFT in New York City. The award will be given to the film which most captures the "Spirit of Collaboration"; where key positions are held by Columbia Graduate Film Division students. This award reflects the goals of the newly-established website, founded by Columbia University students, where filmmakers at all stages of film production can share their reels, search for crew members, and post shoot schedules, dailies, and crew announcements during production. Films and reviews are posted daily by members. VarsityFlicks.com promises to be an invaluable tool for the New York City film community, and we are thrilled to have their support! Film Festival Trailer Screening in Times Square The trailer for the 19th Annual Columbia University Film Festival, created by a team of second years, is currently running in Times Square twice an hour on the Panasonic Astrovision jumbo screen. The trailer will run for two weeks, from April 24th through May 8th, and will screen before each film program during the festival. Special thanks to trailer creators Chris Amundson, Osato Dixon, Jake Kader, Elif Refig, Brendan Rose for all their work and dedication to the piece! Nicole Holofcener To Receive Alumni Award Writer, director, and CU alumna Nicole Holofcener was chosen this year to receive the Graduate Film Division's Andrew Sarris Award. The award, named in honor of the prolific film theorist currently teaching in the Graduate Film Division, is given out each year to a Film Division Alum to recognize his or her outstanding achievements in filmmaking. Holofcener is the writer and director of Walking and Talking, Lovely and Amazing, and, most recently, Friends with Money, and will receive the award at the Film Festival screening in Los Angeles, June 8th, at Raleigh Studios. Festival Party and Venue Announced The Columbia University Film Festival Party, sponsored by Hart/Sharp Video and celebrating the end of festivities in New York, is set to take place at LOFT in Manhattan, located off of Columbus Avenue, between 83rd and 84th, immediately following the Faculty Selects Screening and Awards Presentation on May 11th. Drinks will be provided by sponsors Svedka Vodka and Brooklyn Brewery, and awards to be presented include The IFP Audience Choice Awards, the Film Division Awards, the Student's Choice Awards, and the EP Producing Award. RECALLED screening at Tribeca Film Festival RECALLED, written and directed by Michael Connors and produced by Sean Mullin, is just one of many Film Division student and alumni works playing at this year's Tribeca Film Festival. RECALLED screens at the Columbia University Film Festival in Program B on Monday, May 1st, at 8pm. A party celebrating all Columbia works in this year's Tribeca Film Festival is slated for Friday, April 28th, at DEKK. Click here for more info. GRACELAND screening at Cannes Film Festival GRACELAND, written and directed by Anocha Suwichakornpong, will be screening in this year's Cannes Film Festival as part of Cinéfondation. GRACELAND opens Program B on Monday, May 1st at 8pm. Vote for SADIQ SADIQ, written and directed by Sean Mullin and produced by Mullin and Mitchell Gutman, has been nominated for the first-ever Student Filmmaker Award at the 2006 MTV Movie Awards. The winner will be determined by online voting, with ballots cast by you, the public. To vote, simply log on to: http://www.mtvu.com/on_mtvu/movie_awards/2006/ and choose SADIQ. You may vote as often as you'd like from April 24th to May 19th, and the winner will be flown to Los Angeles to receive the coveted Golden Popcorn at the MTV Movie Awards. SADIQ plays at the Columbia University Film Festival in Program D on Tuesday, May 2nd, at 8pm. Entertainment Partners Announces New Festival Award Entertainment Partners, the leading provider of payroll and accounting services to the film and television industries, and the maker of the indispensable software, EP Budgeting and EP Scheduling, has announced their sponsorship of a new award for a producing student in the graduate Film Division of the School of the Arts. The recipient of the $3,500 award, solicited by faculty members Ira Deutchman and Richard Brick, will be announced at the "after party" of the 19th annual Columbia University Film Festival, held on May 11th at LOFT in Manhattan. In giving this award, Entertainment Partners will recognize a student producer for the successful completion of a film under challenging production circumstances. In addition to the award, Entertainment Partners has installed fifteen sets of their software programs in the SOA's Digital Media Labs and has conducted instructional seminars for students. This is the first year that EP has become involved with Columbia University and we are grateful for their participation! T-Shirts For Sale At Festival Events For the first time ever, t-shirts bearing the official logo and artwork for the Columbia University Film Festival will sell at every film screening and at screenwriting night. The shirts are printed on American Apparel tees, come in a variety of sizes, and feature the logo created by graphic designer Jesse Kirsch. They'll be available for $10 each, with the proceeds going toward the Film Festival. |
